Love Story is a song by American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift, released on September 15, 2008, as the lead single from her second studio album, Fearless. Swift wrote the song about a romantic interest that was not well-received by her family and friends, drawing inspiration from William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. However, unlike Shakespeare’s tragic ending, Swift crafted a narrative with a happy conclusion. The song blends country and pop elements, featuring instruments like banjo, violin, mandolin, and guitar.
Upon its release, Love Story received positive reviews for its writing style and storytelling. It achieved significant commercial success, selling over eight million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling singles of all time. In the United States, the song peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified eight times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
