It was made available on June 6, 2006, in the US, and July 24, 2006, in the UK. After appearing in the second season finale of the medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, which aired on May 15, 2006, the song became extremely well-known in the United States.

Selling steadily for years after its release, Chasing Cars was one of the tracks that demonstrated the effect of legal downloads on single sales in the UK. As of the end of 2006, the song is Snow Patrol’s best-selling single to date and the 14th best-selling single in the UK. That year, it was the final live performance of the song on BBC’s Top of the Pops.
