Barbadian singer Rihanna‘s song Unfaithful is taken from her second studio album, A Girl Like Me. Shaffer “Ne-Yo” Smith wrote the song’s lyrics, while Stargate served as its producers. As the second single off the album, the song was made available by Def Jam Recordings on May 1, 2006. The pop and R&B ballad “Unfaithful” was influenced by the sound of American rock group Evanescence. The song, which was once called “Murderer,” is about a lady who regrets lying to her partner.
Critics gave Unfaithful a mixed to favourable reception; many commended the song’s potent balladry, while others took issue with the lyrics. The song became Rihanna’s third top-ten hit as it peaked at number 10 on the singles charts in 19 different countries, including the UK Singles Chart. A peak of number six on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart was reached by Unfaithful. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified it platinum, meaning that more than one million copies were shipped.
Anthony Mandler directed the song’s accompanying music video, which debuted in May 2006. In the romantic triangle, Rihanna finds herself torn between her partner and her romantic interest, and she later feels guilty about cheating on the former. “Unfaithful” has become a mainstay of Rihanna‘s live shows since its release. She sang it several award shows in 2006, including the World Music Awards and the MOBO Awards. Three of her main tours included the song in their set lists: the Loud Tour (2011), the Good Girl Gone Bad (2007–09), and the Last Girl on Earth Tour (2010–11).
