American R&B singer Keyshia Cole collaborated with Missy Elliott and Lil’ Kim, two American rappers, on the song Let It Go. The song, “Don’t Stop the Music” by Yarbrough and Peoples and “Juicy Fruit” by Mtume are sampled, along with “Juicy” by The Notorious B.I.G., who also sampled “Juicy Fruit.” It was written by Cole, Jack Knight, Cainon Lamb, Lil’ Kim, and Missy Elliott for her second album Just Like You (2007). This was the first time that any of the three performers had worked together; it was an upbeat song written by all three of them with Jack Knight, Cainon Lamb, and James Mtume, produced by Lamb and Elliott.
Released as the lead single from the album, it peaked at number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100, rising from its debut position of number 74 on the issue date of July 7, 2007. This was Cole’s third top ten hit song overall and his first top ten Billboard Hot 100 single as the lead artist. Cole’s first number-one hit on the R&B/Hip-Hop Songs list was also achieved by it. It was one of the nominees for the 50th annual Grammy Awards, which took place in February 2008, in the category of Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. On Rolling Stone’s selection of the 100 Greatest Songs of 2007, “Let It Go” came in at number 59.
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified the single platinum after it sold over two million copies in the US.
