The collaboration with T-Pain was another pivotal element that almost didn’t happen in the form we know today. T-Pain, who was the era’s foremost master of Auto-Tune, reportedly conceived of the Good Life concept while dining with West. He watched the rapper order lobster and Cristal, realizing that he was witnessing a literal embodiment of the high life. However, the recording process was famously exhaustive. West, a relentless perfectionist, reportedly auditioned hooks from multiple R&B stars, including Ne-Yo and John Legend, before settling on T-Pain. T-Pain has since noted that he recorded five different versions of the chorus and didn’t even hear the final, pieced-together version that became the hit until he showed up to the music video shoot.
