Japanese-Australian singer Joji‘s song Glimpse of Us was made available as the lead single from his third studio album Smithereens on June 10, 2022, via Warner Records and 88rising. Riley McDonough, Castle, Alexis Kesselman, and producer Connor McDonough wrote the song. After peaking at number one in Australia, Indonesia, Lithuania, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, and Singapore, number two on the Global 200, and within the top 10 in Canada, Ireland, Norway, the US, and Vietnam, the song became Joji’s most successful hit single to date. Additionally, the song became his first number-one single when it topped the Australian and New Zealand singles charts. Because Joji’s father is half Australian, the song was nominated for Song of the Year at the 2022 Australian ARIA Awards.
Critics praised the song’s simplicity, lyrics, and Joji’s heartfelt voice, and it was widely praised. The song was called a “chilling piano ballad” by Complex’s Brenton Blanchet and a “splendid and striking” tune by The New York Times’ Caramanica.
