English boy band JLS‘s song Eyes Wide Shut is taken from their second studio album, Outta This World. On February 13, 2011, the song—which was written by JLS, Tim McEwan, and Lars Halvor Jensen of the Danish production team DEEKAY—was made available as the third single off the album. English rapper Tinie Tempah contributes guest vocals to the single version of the song. In the UK, the song’s peak position is ranked eighth.
The song was recorded by JLS for their album Outta This World, their second studio album. The song wasn’t supposed to be a single, according to the band. But after it was reworked with rapper Tinie Tempah, Marvin said in an interview with Digital Spy that it was the obvious choice for a third single: “He’s the best rapper in the country and the only person we wanted to work with, so it would silly not to make it a single.” The song was initially performed live by the band on the opening dates of their Outta This World arena tour. Tinie Tempah joined them for the song’s London performances.
The renowned American director Syndrome oversaw the November 2010 shoot of the music video, which took place in London. Marvin Humes of the group pointed out that the video, which was shot entirely against a green screen, was heavily influenced by the Jim Henson picture Labyrinth. In the video, JLS can be seen singing and dancing in a fantastical setting as they battle their way past several artificial barriers like trees and stone walls. Throughout the entire clip, a shadowy female figure hovers over them. January 2011 saw the release of the video on the group’s VEVO channel.
Eyes Wide Shut was compared to Liberty X’s Thinking It Over by Robert Copsey of Digital Spy. He gave it four stars and composed, “Yes, the newer tune is more club-friendly-2011-stylee and features a guest rap from man of the mo Tinie Tempah, but the pop-garagey verses and R&B-lite, catchy-as-cholera chorus have a distinctly old-school feel to them that makes for yet another unstoppable chart missile from Marv & Co.”
