American singer Hilary Duff recorded the song Stranger for her fourth studio album, Dignity and released on June 25, 2007. Duff and Kara DioGuardi wrote the song’s lyrics, and Julius “Logic” Diaz, Derrick Harvin, and Vada Nobles produced it.
The song received three stars from a writer for BBC Radio 1, who noted that it “continues the more grown-up, serious side of Hilary Duff” and that the Eastern sound was heavily influenced by songs like “Buttons” by the Pussycat Dolls. The writer also said that the vocals were “definitely more in the ballpark of ‘husky’ rather than ‘impressive'”. He said “Stranger” “[wouldn’t] sound out of place on a Britney Spears album, which suggests to me that she’s done a passable job of leaving behind her bubblegum past,” even though he would prefer “Danger,” another song on Dignity, to be a single. He also said it made him “[do] a fair bit of seat-dancing.”
The song was not well-publicized, and as a result, it lasted a week at number ninety-seven on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, making it Duff’s lowest-peaking song ever. The song was widely played in American nightclubs and reached its highest position of one on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart. This marked Duff’s third appearance on the list and her second straight number-one hit. Stranger peaked at number thirty-ninth on the Hot Dance Club Play Tracks chart at the end of the year. It is featured on the MuchMusic compilation album MuchDance 2008 and peaked at number eighty-six on the Canadian Hot 100. The song had sold 253,000 copies in the US as of July 27, 2014.
