American recording artist Fiona Apple‘s song Criminal is the third single taken from her first studio album Tidal, which was released on June 2, 1997 by Work Records and Columbia Records. According to Apple, the song is about “feeling bad for using your sexuality to get something so easily.” It peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks and No. 21 on the Billboard Hot 100, her only entry to date. It is Apple’s highest charting single.

The song was nominated for Best Rock Song and won the 40th Grammy Awards for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. “Criminal” was ranked No. 71 on Blender magazine’s 2005 list of “The 500 Greatest Songs Since You Were Born,” and No. 55 on VH1’s “100 Greatest Songs of the ’90s.”

Harris Savides provided the cinematography for Mark Romanek’s May 1997 music video for the song. June 1997, one month later, saw its publication. Visualist Ash Beck added extra lighting vignettes and enhanced the scene with a retroreflector in Fiona’s eyes. Known for her “heroin chic” style, The New Yorker described Apple as “looking like an underfed Calvin Klein model” while sulking in various degrees of undress in the video. Adolescence and voyeurism are two of its themes. The video took for the Best Cinematography MTV Video Music Award in 1998.
