It was revealed at the beginning of 2008 that Fall Out Boy would be covering “Beat It” on their album Live in Phoenix. The song has already been played by the band at events like the Coors Amphitheatre and at festivals like Leeds’ Carling Weekend. Before recording the song, bassist Pete Wentz, who has reportedly been obsessed with Jackson, said he would only watch Moonwalker. Additionally, it was revealed that Eddie Van Halen’s guitar solo will be added by John Mayer.

According to Patrick Stump, the band’s lead singer and guitarist, they had no intention of covering the song. Additionally, the band had not initially planned for the song to be released as a single, according to bassist Pete Wentz. “‘Beat It’ seemed like a song that would be cool and that we could do our own take on,” he explained. Wentz finally called John Mayer to contribute the guitar solo after spending some time choosing a guitarist for the song. “We were trying to think about who is a contemporary guitar guy who’s going to go down as a legend,” Wentz said afterwards.

Fall Out Boy’s rendition of ‘Beat It’ became a staple on iTunes’ Top 10 chart after it was released digitally as a single in April 2008. The song became another top 10 hit in Canada, peaking at No. 8. It also peaked at No. 98 in the Netherlands, No. 75 in Austria, No. 14 in New Zealand, and No. 13 in Australia.

Shane Drake directed the music video for “Beat It” by Fall Out Boy, which was created as a tribute to Jackson. Among the many cameos in the music video were Tony Hale, Donald Faison, Joel David Moore, and Hal Sparks in Michael Jackson costumes teaching a karate class/dance session. Later, the short film was nominated for Best Rock Video at the MTV Video Music Awards.
