The release was chosen for Ciara’s second single on her official Myspace page before the poll concluded, surpassing the choices of That’s Right and Can’t Leave ‘Em Alone. According to the Manchester Evening News in Britain, the song is “guaranteed to be a smash hit in the U.S.” despite having “photocopied lyrics,” “gymnastic style vocals,” and a “epic instrumental.” It’s deemed “one of her best tracks so far” by Chocolate Magazine and reveals her more mature side.
Like a Boy made its debut on the US Billboard Hot 100 at number 81 in the issue dated March 17, 2007. Number 19 on the list was the single’s peak position in the May 5, 2007 issue. The song was on the chart for a total of twenty weeks. Ciara achieved her sixth top-ten hit on the list with the song, which also peaked at number six on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. The song is the album’s most successful year-end single and peaked at number 68 on the Billboard Year End singles of 2007. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified the song platinum on September 6, 2019, in recognition of its sales of more than a million digital copies in the United States.
