American singer Ciara performed the song Like a Boy from her second album, Ciara: The Evolution. Written by J. Que, Ezekiel Lewis, Balewa Muhammad, Ciara, Candice Nelson, and Calvin Kenon, it is the second single in Europe and the third release in the United States.
The release was chosen for Ciara’s second single on her official Myspace page before the poll concluded, surpassing the choices of That’s Right and Can’t Leave ‘Em Alone. This was confirmed in an article by MTV News. Despite being a respectable smash, the single didn’t achieve the same level of popularity as its North American counterpart. On February 13, 2007, it was submitted to a national urban radio station. On April 2, 2007, the single was made available in the United Kingdom.
Critics gave Like a Boy positive reviews. According to About dot com writer Bill Lamb, Ciara delivers a “breathlessness delivering” and the song is “intoxicating”. Entertainment Weekly’s Jody Rosen described the song as “par excellence” and a “stirring revenge fantasy”. According to the Manchester Evening News in Britain, the song is “guaranteed to be a smash hit in the U.S.” despite having “photocopied lyrics,” “gymnastic style vocals,” and a “epic instrumental.” It’s deemed “one of her best tracks so far” by Chocolate Magazine and reveals her more mature side.
Like a Boy made its debut on the US Billboard Hot 100 at number 81 in the issue dated March 17, 2007. Number 19 on the list was the single’s peak position in the May 5, 2007 issue. The song was on the chart for a total of twenty weeks. Ciara achieved her sixth top-ten hit on the list with the song, which also peaked at number six on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs.
The song is the album’s most successful year-end single and peaked at number 68 on the Billboard Year End singles of 2007. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified the song platinum on September 6, 2019, in recognition of its sales of more than a million digital copies in the United States.
