It is featured on her tenth studio album released in the English language. It was composed by Dave Stewart, a former member of the Eurythmics, and Kara DioGuardi for their band Platinum Weird.

February 2007 saw the planned release of the song as a single from their unreleased self-titled album. But when DioGuardi and Stewart recorded it, they played the song for Dion’s spouse René Angélil, who was so taken by it that she decided to record it as well.

With a peak inside the top 10 in Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Italy, and Switzerland, the song was a global hit. It also reached its highest position of 40 on the UK Singles list and number 54 on the Billboard Hot 100 list. The Hot Dance Club Play chart was likewise topped by it.

The song was a 2009 Juno Award nominee for Single of the Year. “Taking Chances” was performed by Rachel Berry, played by Lea Michele, in the popular Fox television series Glee. The Billboard Hot 100 list peaked at number 71 for her rendition.
