Barbadian artist Rihanna recorded the song Don’t Stop the Music for her third studio album, Good Girl Gone Bad. It was the fourth single from the album to be released globally on September 7, 2007.
Tawanna Dabney and StarGate, the song’s producers, wrote the tune. The lyric “Mama-say, mama-sa, ma-ma-koosa” from Michael Jackson’s 1983 single “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin'” was sampled, and Jackson was given credit for authoring it as well. Manu Dibango, a musician from Cameroon, sued Rihanna and Michael Jackson, claiming that the hook first appeared in his song “Soul Makossa” from 1972. Hip hop music is the main source of the rhythmic elements found in the dance track Don’t Stop the Music.
Music critics often described the track as a “banger” that revitalized the R&B-pop scene with a dose of “ballsier” energy. For instance, Clash Magazine noted that after a string of slower ballads, the song brought back a necessary “ummph” through its building electro-house beat. Similarly, Tom Breihan of Pitchfork characterized the track as a brilliant piece of “Euroclub insanity,” specifically pointing out how seamlessly the Jackson chant blended into the track’s aggressive, pounding bassline.
Retrospective reviews have been even more generous regarding the song’s impact. In 2014, Complex magazine referred to the single as “one of the earliest shots fired in the mainstreaming of dance music,” noting that it arrived well before the full “EDM-ification” of the American Top 40. Journalists for The Guardian have echoed this sentiment, calling it an “elegantly constructed” hybrid that proved Rihanna could flit between genres while stamping her own unique identity on every sound she touched.
Numerous honours were bestowed upon the song, including a nomination for a Grammy Award in the category of Best Dance Recording. In nine countries, including Australia, France, Germany, and Switzerland, Don’t Stop the Music peaked at number one. The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) certified it double platinum after it peaked at number four on the UK Singles Chart.
The song reached its highest position of number one on the US Billboard Dance Club Songs charts and number three on the US Billboard Hot 100. As of 2015, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified it as sextuple platinum. In the US, the song had sold over 3.7 million copies.
The music video for the song was shot in Prague by Anthony Mandler. In the video, Rihanna hangs out with club patrons after breaking into the hidden club hidden behind a candy store with her pals. In 2008, the singer included Don’t Stop the Music in her set lists for Good Girl Gone Bad, Last Girl on Earth, Loud, and Diamonds World Tour.
She also sang it at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards and the NRJ Music Awards. It was named one of the most performed songs of 2009 by the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP). As the second single from his 2009 album The Pursuit, English recording artist Jamie Cullum released a cover of the song, which went on to chart in a number of European nations.
