R. Kelly – My Story Ringtone Download (Feat. Katie Got Bandz, Rockie Fresh)

Released in November 2013, the My Story (Chicago Remix) was more than just a promotional track for R. Kelly’s twelfth studio album, Black Panties. By enlisting two of Chicago’s most distinct rising voices at the time—drill pioneer Katie Got Bandz and Maybach Music Group (MMG) signee Rockie Fresh—Kelly attempted to bridge the gap between his legacy and the aggressive “Drill” movement that was redefining the city’s identity.

The remix departs significantly from the original 2-Chainz-assisted version. Instead of a standard R&B trap beat, the Chicago Remix adopts a heavier, more percussive drill-inspired production. Kelly himself re-recorded his verses to include local slang and cultural markers, even slipping in a playful nod to Chief Keef’s “Laughing to the Bank” with his own “ha-ha-ha” vocal inflections.

The song’s core message remains a “rags-to-riches” chronicle. Kelly uses the hook to anchor his history in the “Chi-town dirt,” framing his evolution from a street performer under the “L” tracks to a man wearing Versace shirts as a testament to survival.

The guest features provide two contrasting perspectives on the Chicago experience:

Katie Got Bandz: The Voice of the Low End Representing the Bronzeville neighborhood, Katie Got Bandz (often called “Drillary Clinton”) brings the raw energy of the South Side to the track. Her verse focuses on her sudden visibility and the grit required to make it out of the projects. She famously shouts out injured Bulls star Derrick Rose, rapping, “We in this bitch, D. Rose back!”—a line that resonated deeply with a city rooting for both its basketball hero and its local music scene.

Rockie Fresh: The Smooth Trajectory Rockie Fresh offers a more melodic, polished flow that reflects his transition into the mainstream. His lyrics focus on the luxury that comes with success, contrasting his current lifestyle with the struggles of his past. He represents the “new Chicago” that was gaining a foothold in the global hip-hop industry through major label deals and high-profile collaborations.
The Strategic “Storytelling”

This remix was part of a larger campaign to solidify Kelly’s connection to his hometown during a period where he was seeking to re-establish his dominance in R&B. By aligning himself with Katie and Rockie, he positioned himself as an elder statesman validating the next generation.

However, looking back through the lens of 2025, the song is often viewed as part of the same self-mythologizing effort found in his memoir, Soulacoaster. Both the song and the book use the “struggle to success” narrative to create a sympathetic public image, focusing on his talent and local roots while carefully omitting the legal and moral controversies that would eventually lead to his incarceration and the end of his career.
