The song River is by Miley Cyrus, an American singer. It was made available as the second single from Cyrus’s eighth studio album Endless Summer Vacation on March 13, 2023, via Columbia Records. Kid Harpoon and Tyler Johnson produced the song, and Cyrus and Justin Tranter wrote the lyrics.
River is a dance-pop and synth-pop song that features elements of acid pop, post-disco, new wave, and synthwave. Cyrus calls it a “dancefloor banger”. The tune has guitars, throbbing synths and an acid line from a Roland 303. Emily Swingle of Clash said it reminded her of Miley Cyrus’s Can’t Be Tamed album. The song is a “retro synthpop banger,” according to BrooklynVegan’s Andrew Sacher, who also mentioned that it might go well with her 2020 album Plastic Hearts.
Jacob Bixenman directed the River music video, which was shot in black and white. Cyrus published a teaser video along with the release date on March 7, 2023. In it, a number of shirtless men join Cyrus, who is dancing under a spotlight on an elevated platform lit up in black. It starts to rain towards the conclusion. The video was described as “sleek and sexy” by Elle’s Erica Gonzales and as “moody” by Glenn Rowley of Billboard.
River peaked at number 32 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 16 on the Billboard Global 200 charts, in addition to reaching the top 10 in Croatia, Hungary, and Israel.
