Cookie Jar is a 2008 single by American rap rock band Gym Class Heroes, featuring R&B artist The-Dream. Released on July 8, 2008, it served as the second single from their fourth studio album, The Quilt. The track was also included in the digital EP Patches from the Quilt, which previewed songs from the upcoming album.
The song employs the metaphor of a “cookie jar” to represent the temptations and challenges of fidelity in a committed relationship. Lead singer Travie McCoy, who co-wrote the song during his relationship with pop star Katy Perry, uses the analogy to describe the allure of various “cookies” (i.e., other women) and the difficulty of resisting them despite being in a relationship. Guitarist Disashi Lumumba-Kasongo explained that the song reflects the common dilemma many men face when they find themselves attracted to multiple women, even when they are in a relationship.
Cookie Jar achieved moderate commercial success. In the United States, it peaked at number 59 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song performed better internationally, reaching number 6 on the UK Singles Chart and number 41 on the Australian ARIA Singles Chart.
The music video for Cookie Jar premiered on FNMTV on August 15, 2008. It features a series of scenes, including McCoy in a room with blaring lights, a white room where the band performs, and a setting where McCoy is tempted by a literal cookie jar, symbolizing the song’s central metaphor.
