Gorillaz – Doncamatic Ringtone Download (feat. Daley)

When Gorillaz released Doncamatic (All Played Out) in late 2010, it felt like a sudden, neon-bright detour from the maritime gloom of the Plastic Beach era. While much of that year’s output was defined by sweeping orchestral arrangements and environmental melancholy, Doncamatic arrived as a self-contained pop experiment that celebrated the intersection of music history and digital futurism.

The track takes its name from the Donca Matic DA-20, a pioneering rhythm machine released in 1963 by the Japanese company Korg. By naming the song after this vintage piece of hardware, Damon Albarn paid homage to the origins of programmed percussion. The song even features the voice of Korg’s founder, Tsutomu Katoh, whose rhythmic pronunciation of the machine’s name provides the track’s quirky, staccato foundation. This blend of primitive technology and modern production creates a soundscape that feels both nostalgic and ahead of its time.

Central to the song’s identity is the vocal performance of British singer Daley. Discovered by Albarn in the London club circuit, Daley brought a silky, soulful tenor that contrasted sharply with the typical grit of Gorillaz’s guest rappers or the weary vocals of the character 2-D. His performance turned the track into a high-energy soul-pop anthem. Lyrically, the song explores the exhausting nature of the music industry—the idea of being “all played out”—while paradoxically delivering a melody that feels incredibly fresh and vibrant.

The music video, directed by the band’s co-creator Jamie Hewlett, remains one of the most distinctive entries in the Gorillaz visual canon. It features a live-action Daley navigating a claustrophobic, retro-futuristic submarine across the ocean floor. As he travels toward the fictional Plastic Beach island, he communicates with 2-D via a grainy monitor. The video serves as a “bridge” in the band’s narrative, showing a character desperately trying to reach the central hub of the band’s chaotic world. It seamlessly integrates real-world footage with the gritty, stylized animation that fans have come to expect, further blurring the lines between the band’s fictional lore and reality.

Initially released as a standalone single, Doncamatic eventually found its home on the “Picture Disc” and deluxe reissues of Plastic Beach. While it was once seen as a commercial outlier, it has aged into a fan favorite. It represents a specific moment in the band’s history where the focus shifted from grand concept albums to the joy of a singular, catchy hook. The track remains a testament to Albarn’s ability to spot rising talent and his obsession with the mechanical tools that make modern music possible.
