American singer-songwriter Gigi Perez released Sailor Song as a single on July 26, 2024. Her first single to rank in both the UK singles chart and the Billboard Hot 100 was her third independent release after leaving Interscope Records. It became viral on TikTok. Perez declared that her composition was “not a democracy” when the song attracted criticism from extreme right-wing Christian congregations.
After Perez’s songs “Celene” and “Sometimes (Backwood)” became viral on TikTok in 2021, Interscope Records signed her and put out her EP How to Catch a Falling Knife. After being dropped by the company, Perez went back to putting out songs on her own, releasing “Normalcy” and “Please Be Rude” in 2024.
She started teasing the acoustic ballad “Sailor Song” on TikTok in April 2024, and it quickly gained popularity. The song tells the story of Perez’s attraction to a woman who resembles actress Anne Hathaway. On July 26, 2024, Perez released the song; by August 27th, the original clip had been utilised as the music for more than 40,000 videos on the platform, and the official audio had been featured in over 75,000.
The song received widespread acclaim, with fans and critics drawing comparisons to artists like Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes, and Hozier. Lucy Harbron of Far Out praised Perez’s “utterly unique and stunning voice that is rich with emotion” and her “sharp lyricism that manages to articulate even the trickiest feelings with pure poetry,” rating the song 4.5 out of 5. Commercially, Sailor Song marked Perez’s debut on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 22, and achieved significant success internationally, reaching number one in Ireland, Latvia, and the United Kingdom. The Official Charts Company highlighted the significance of a “brazen gay love song” topping the UK charts.
In November 2024, Sailor Song was featured as the “Record of the Week” on British Indie and Alternative rock station Radio X. Perez discussed the song’s success and shared insights into its creation during an interview on “The Evening Show With Dan O’Connell,” where she also performed an acoustic version. She revealed that the song stemmed from a place of deep fear and uncertainty, describing it as a love song written as an escape from a challenging period in her life.
