After being included on the soundtrack of the Brazilian telenovela Insensato Coração, the song was released as a single exclusively in Brazil on April 12, 2011, by Warner Music Brasil. Both the Billboard Brasil Hot Pop & Popular and the Brasil Hot 100 Airplay featured the song, which spent several weeks at the top of the charts. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) awarded it two platinum certifications. The Doo-Wops & Hooligans Tour (2010–2012), the Hooligans in Wondaland Tour, and the South American leg of the 24K Magic World Tour (2017–2018) were the three occasions where Mars performed it live.
Following its release, Talking to the Moon peaked at number one on the Brasil Hot 100 Airplay and Billboard Brasil Hot Pop & Popular charts in Brazil. The song topped the former list for 22 weeks, although it only remained at the top for nine weeks on the latter chart. As of 2012, it was the fourth single on Billboard Brasil Hot Pop & Popular to have spent the most weeks at the top, and it placed seventh on Brasil Hot 100 Airplay to have spent the most weeks at the top. The song saw a comeback in April 2021 on the video-sharing app TikTok, which helped it to chart in a number of countries, including Australia and Switzerland.
