American singer Britney Spears‘ fifth studio album, Blackout, contains the song Radar. Bloodshy & Avant and the Clutch wrote and produced it, with additional writing by Henrik Jonback. Members of the Clutch claimed to be taken aback by Spears’ work ethic during the recording sessions, which happened the day after she filed for divorce from Kevin Federline. Originally, Radar was supposed to be the third single to be released from Blackout, but Break the Ice was selected instead. At that point, Spears was recording her sixth studio album, Circus, and the song was supposed to be the fourth single. However, the release was postponed. Later, it was added as a bonus track to Circus and was made available by Jive Records as the album’s fourth and last single on June 22, 2009.
Radar has a dancing vibe that is midtempo in nature. Sonar pulses, distorted synths, and auto-tuned vocals are all used to enhance Spears’ performance. The protagonist and a man are mentioned in the lyrics as being attracted to each other, with her questioning whether he understands how she feels. Critics gave the song mixed reviews; some thought it was one of the best parts of Circus, while others thought it was overproduced and criticised her processed voice. It peaked in the top ten in Sweden and the top 40 in both Ireland and New Zealand in July 2008. The song did not do well in the charts upon its release as a single from Circus in 2009; it was not able to make it into the top 40 in the majority of nations.
Dave Meyers directed the accompanying music video for the track, which is an homage to Madonna’s Take a Bow music video. Spears plays an aristocratic woman in a love triangle with two polo players in the video. Critics gave the video mixed reviews, praising the style but criticising the idea for being unoriginal. Spears performed Radar at The Circus Starring Britney Spears, and she pole danced in the dance sequence that went with it.
