The song Rockstar 101 is from Barbadian singer Rihanna‘s fourth studio album, Rated R (2009). Guns N’ Roses’ British-American guitarist Slash is featured in the song. As the album’s fifth single, it was made available on May 18, 2010. Makeba Riddick produced the song’s vocals, while producers The-Dream and Christopher “Tricky” Stewart worked with Rihanna to write it. The song is a grunge-crunk and hip-hop version on the album; however, the remix EPs feature dance, dubstep, and electronic music versions, some of which were remixed by Dave Audé and Mark Picchiotti.
The reaction to Rockstar101 was divided among reviewers, who criticised the “aggressive” tone and applauded Rihanna’s “bravado” in particular. The song peaked at number two on the Dance Club Songs chart and number 64 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. In April 2010, Rihanna appeared on American Idol to promote the song. It was a part of her Diamonds World Tour (2013) and Last Girl on Earth (2010) set lists. The music video for the song, which features Rihanna doing a Slash impression, was directed by Melina Matsoukas. In certain segments of the video, she dons handcrafted jewellery created by Fannie Schiavoni, and Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker makes a brief appearance.
First appearing on the Billboard Dance Club Songs list in the United States, Rockstar 101 peaked at number two and remained there for 14 weeks. The song spent seven weeks at the top of the US Hot Digital Songs list, where it peaked at number 28. After that, it spent five weeks and reached its high at number 64 on the US Billboard Hot 100 list. Additionally, on the US R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Songs chart, it reached at number 10. On August 22, 2010, “Rockstar 101” made its debut on the Australian Singles list, peaking at number 24 for one week two weeks later. The song stayed on the list for six weeks.
